Understanding Engine Component Categories
Cylinder Kits (Block + Piston Assembly)
A complete cylinder kit for Bajaj RE 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines typically includes the cylinder block, piston, piston rings, gudgeon pin, circlips, and base/head gaskets. When sourcing from China, specify:
Bore size and oversize options: Standard, +0.25 mm, +0.50 mm, +0.75 mm, and +1.00 mm. Importers should stock at minimum standard, +0.25, and +0.50 for each engine variant.
Cylinder liner material: Centrifugally cast alloy cast iron (Grade FG260 or equivalent). Avoid sand-cast liners — they develop porosity under thermal cycling.

Pistons and Piston Rings
Pistons for Bajaj RE engines are typically hypereutectic aluminum-silicon alloys (AlSi12CuNiMg or similar). Key procurement specifications:
Alloy grade: Insist on the exact alloy designation — e.g., AC8A, A336, or LM13 equivalent. Generic “aluminum alloy” is not a specification.
Skirt coating: Many genuine RE pistons carry a graphite or tin coating on the skirt for break-in lubrication. Confirm whether your supplier applies this.
Ring pack: Standard 3-ring configuration (2 compression, 1 oil control). Compression rings are typically ductile iron with chrome-plated running face; oil rings use a nitrided steel rail with expander. Specify ring material, face coating, and end-gap tolerance.
Thermal expansion clearance: Piston-to-bore clearance at assembly should be 0.03–0.05 mm measured at the skirt. Tighter clearances seize; wider clearances cause piston slap and oil consumption.
Crankshafts
The crankshaft is the single most expensive engine component in the RE platform. Getting it wrong destroys the entire bottom end. Key specifications:
Forging grade: EN24 (817M40) or AISI 4340 alloy steel, quenched and tempered to 28–32 HRC core hardness with induction-hardened journals to 55–60 HRC.
Big-end bearing: Caged needle roller bearing (KZK or equivalent), with C3 internal clearance for thermal expansion. Confirm the bearing manufacturer — NTN, Koyo, or Nachi are the acceptable tiers.
Balancing: Crankshaft should be dynamically balanced to Grade G6.3 per ISO 1940, or better. Request the balance report.
